bonjour!

Sometimes for reasons you can't explain you find yourself at 11pm wanting french toast. This happened to me on Saturday night, I went into the kitchen and decided that I probably had all the stuff I needed but I couldn't for some reason remember how to put it all together. I chose to turn to the internet to make sure I wouldn't poison myself. As I typed "french toast" into my search bar something wonderful happened. The drop down menu appeared containing such treasures as french toast recipe, french toast bake, french toast uniforms and something that made a choir of angels sing, french toast casserole.

He's so adorable I just could not resist. It makes me wish my nickname was toast instead of button.

I wish I could tell you how long I spent going through recipes but I was so distracted by the promise of deliciousness that I lost all track of time (aka embarrassingly long). I wasn't looking for the perfect recipe, I was looking for the recipe that contained all the stuff I had in my kitchen. The one I found seemed do able if I made two minor tweaks: don't let it sit over night & put a cooking sheet over the dish instead of tinfoil. Thankfully I didn't have to do that second one, a friend stole one of my baking dishes so I contacted him demanding it back, oh and by the way can I have a piece of tin foil? I have awesome friends. I also made some adjustments to the liquid parts of the recipes (noted in parentheses) because the loaf of bread I had was called french toast bread which I think just means that the bread is twice as thick as it's supposed to be.
I know you're dying to make it yourself so without further yammering here we go.

Button's Middle Of The Night French Toast Casserole.

1/2 C Butter (3/4)
12  slices White Bread
1 C Brown Sugar
1 tsp Cinnamon or Baking Spice (2)
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
5 eggs (6)
1 1/2 c Milk (2)

-Melt butter & pour in a 9X13 pan (I melt it in a measuring cup in the microwave)

-Mix together brown sugar & cinnamon (or baking spice)
-Wisk eggs, milk & vanilla together
-Layer bottom of pan with half the bread

-Sprinkle half brown sugar mix over the bread

-Layer second half of bread

- Sprinkle remaining brown sugar then pour egg mixture over all

-Cover & refrigerate overnight (or not)
-In the morning, cover with tinfoil and bake at 350 for 30 minutes

-Uncover and bake 15 more minutes (should be browned and set and delicious)

- Enjoy!

So, the verdict?
After adding a little bit of syrup and actually waiting for it to cool down Mr. Button called it "quite good" which for him is kind of a big deal and then later on said "good job". I happened to think it was outstanding and wouldn't change a single thing about the recipe. Leaving the crust on gave us 6 defined 2 piece stacks which made getting out out of the pan a tidy experience which is always a plus. I wouldn't make this every week because it's far from healthy but as far as treats go, it's a keeper.(And tastes good cold the next morning.)
